So far I have read Suldrun's Garden and The Broken Sword at your suggestion and have not been disappointed. I hope to read Viriconium next. I wonder if I might suggest some titles as well, given the authors you have mentioned.

Two novellas by George MacDonald come to mind, The Light Princess and The Golden Key. They are indeed allegorical, but I do not personally find them to be pedantic at all; rather they have a wonder-filled, mystical bent to them. (I agree that at times he can indeed be pedantic.)

As for Gene Wolfe, I wonder if you have read his stand alone novel, Peace? It's quite different from most of his other works, and perhaps even more compelling. It's also rather short.

Edith Nesbit has written a book called The Enchanted Castle, which may hold up to many rereadings in my experience, especially as her humor is so wonderful.

Have you read Moorcock's Dancers at the End of Time quartet? The prose is lovely, the conception decadent and enticing.

How about Patricia A. McKillip's The Forgotten Beasts of Eld? Perhaps that has been recommended to you before; it's one of her better-known books...

Have you read Tolkien's novella The Smith of Wootton Major? It is short and filled with the kind of wonder which (I agree) is in fact lacking from most of the famous trilogy.

I second the recommendation of Emma Bull's War for the Oaks.

Why is The Last Unicorn second-tier? This was really my only moment of shock upon reading the list. To me it was extraordinarily profound and moving, ultimately a meditation on loss and grief, and never a sermon or purely an allegory, since for Beagle character always comes first...I'm curious what your experience reading it was like.Esmeraldahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15919031936626839724noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8292243573706628824.post-18721340453764510692022-09-07T13:27:39.358-07:002022-09-07T13:27:39.358-07:00This comment has been removed by the author.Willy Wobbleshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14183143835150786729noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8292243573706628824.post-25109168453388865532022-04-17T13:17:13.804-07:002022-04-17T13:17:13.804-07:00Since you haven't been writing reviews for a f...Since you haven't been writing reviews for a few years now, did you get around to reading Piranesi by Susanna Clarke?

I just bought it but have a feeling in the pit of my stomach that it is going to suck. Anyways, I can't get around to it since Moby Dick needs to be finished first and well... that is certainly a monster of a book to get through.

Great stuff. Any list that starts with Titus Groan/Gormenghast and includes Fritz Lieber's Lankhmar is alright by me! I would include the surreal Voyage to Arcturus on the list, and though I'm sure it's writing style is subject to heavy critique, it's a unique book of fantasy. zinc1024https://www.blogger.com/profile/08757143045532870444noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8292243573706628824.post-86170246001764161532021-11-03T19:34:42.423-07:002021-11-03T19:34:42.423-07:00Keely Lives! Like he thought he was being clever but wasn't. Or a joke where it isn't a joke. The author just actually came off as immature to me through his writing. And he has some mild misogyny at a minimum. There's a difference between writing a misogynist character and having the narrator and the plot also pulling the weight of the misogyny. I find your anti-European bias hideous and revolting, same goes for your inclusion of so many mediocre UK and US comics into this shambles of a list. Listing superhero crap like Hellboy, Astroboy, all of the utter dross written by Ellis, Mills (2000 AD? Were you on acid?) over anything by Bilal, Jodorowsky, de Crecy, is not only stupid but ignorant and wrong. Busiek? Gerber? Are you complete bonkers? Donald freakin' Duck? I do agree with many of your thoughts, such as on Pullman and Tolkien, who I've read both of and I actually prefer Pullman. I wonder if you've read his sequel series: The Book of Dust. It expands quite nicely on "His Dark Materials" in my opinion.

One thing—and this almost turned me off from your list since I saw the bottom first. What you said about Brandon Sanderson seems... well, condescending, though I usually hate to use the word.

"His writing and talks on fantasy make it seem like he's missed the point on how stories work."... Wow. Let's break this down. Sanderson certainly isn't for everyone, perhaps not even for most fantasy fans. However, you seem to have taken on the mindset that there's only one way to interpret and enjoy fantasy—your way. I could write a book about the problems with that mindset. Please let me know if I misunderstood you, and you were just stating your opinion.

In that case, I might change it to something along the lines of "His writing and talks on fantasy make it clear that he interprets fantasy in a very different way than I do."Miscellaneous Goblinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04964935199000023224noreply@blogger.com
