I really fear that the male-ness of this list has slipped you by. Female comic creators can provide a welcome departure from the edgy machismo, off-putting male gaze, and poorly written female characters that unfortunately often dominate the genre.Kzhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15682152633583180402noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8292243573706628824.post-13897141816243456182021-09-24T18:05:48.801-07:002021-09-24T18:05:48.801-07:00It's quite obvious from this list that you'...It's quite obvious from this list that you're simply too thick to understand the brilliance of the European authors like Bilal, or Moebius (it tells volumes that you prefer the mediocrity of Blueberry over the sheer brillance and poetry of Incal and Arzak - you are like a 10 year old who is asked to read magical realism - apparently you just aren't much of a grown up yet!). I find your anti-European bias hideous and revolting, same goes for your inclusion of so many mediocre UK and US comics into this shambles of a list. Listing superhero crap like Hellboy, Astroboy, all of the utter dross written by Ellis, Mills (2000 AD? Were you on acid?) over anything by Bilal, Jodorowsky, de Crecy, is not only stupid but ignorant and wrong. Busiek? Gerber? Are you complete bonkers? Donald freakin' Duck? Well, of course you are mad and tripping!
And as someone above said, you forgot about the independent American artists completely, intead chose to focus on all the superhero and Disney dribble.Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01798631181204647429noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8292243573706628824.post-63008095408356852072021-07-30T21:02:54.537-07:002021-07-30T21:02:54.537-07:00I don't like it.I don't like it.Neeladrihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04061393396195317489noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8292243573706628824.post-72709530732066476792021-03-10T21:22:00.834-08:002021-03-10T21:22:00.834-08:00cool list.

Don Rosa
Don Rosa is one my top top ......CONTINUES

Don Rosa
Don Rosa is one my top top favourite, like Barks, but he is very different from the latter! One more reason to have a look at his stuff. Rosa is considered the heir of Barks because his whole body of work is basically a huge fan-fiction, which treats Barks’s corpus of duck stories as a unique coherent continuity. This goes against Barks’s view of his own material. And that’s the first difference. More importantly, Rosa’s narrative rhythm and comedic style are somehow ‘inverse’ to Barks’s: the latter had a very synthetic approach to storytelling and gags, mostly based on scene-to-scene transitions, to use McCloud's terminology; the former stages a more 'moment-to-moment transitions’ kind of comedy.

Hugo Pratt
Almost all Corto Maltese albums are now available in English. Unfortunately in b/w, rather than the beautiful colouring versions that we have in France and Italy. You have no excuse not to dive into it. The musts to read are in my view:
'Corto Maltese In Siberia’ (1974). Wrongly named like that by the French, since it takes place in Manchuria, which is quite far from Siberia: the original more mysterious Italian name is ‘Corte Sconta dett’Arcana’, venetian for ‘Hidden Court called Arcane’.
’The Golden House of Samarkand’ (1980)

Katsuhiro Otomo
Give a try to ‘Domu - a child’s dream' (1982), his short work published before Akira. From your opinion of the volumes of the latter, I have a feeling that you may like this. Well, whenever they decide to reprint it anywhere in the West.
Here a good youtube reference for the work: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pyOErw0GG_k

Philip Druillet
For someone that likes that half-charlatan of Moebius so much, it is weird that you seem not aware of his friend that actually opened the path for many of the visual ideas Giraud is credited for. Not my favorite this one either, but here is one thing you may wanna have a look at: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/6894318-la-nuit
Here a youtube playlist on this guy opera:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DFZmJ2UPbRs&list=PLXmrXLrKIm4vC8wku9SJdqU3qoLQfbSr5

Mike Mignola
Avoid Rocket Racoon. It is written by a core Marvel writer, and it is bad. Mignola was only penciling on this, and in a style forcedly far away form his natural edgy and synthetic one.

American independent stuff
Normally Americans (and to be honest even Europeans) who do not like superhero crap tend to be knowledgeable about the ’serious’ American comics literature, like Chris Ware, Daniel Clowes, Charles Burns, the Hernandez Brothers, just to mention those that even my grandma has heard of. But you don’t mention that stuff in your post. I do not mean to say that you would like these kind of authors, but I am puzzled by the lack of that in your lists.

Apologies for the inevitable mistakes, I am not a native English, and life is to short to spell-check a post written for a stranger. Bye.
Monkey_Feyerabendhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12573708743732899341noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8292243573706628824.post-37394277265234168862020-07-22T17:31:41.235-07:002020-07-22T17:31:41.235-07:00Just discovered this blog thought goodreads, which...Just discovered this blog thought goodreads, which I started to use a few days ago in order to write down my thoughts on the comics that I am currently reading or re-reading.

Thank you for taking the time to write down this list. I guess it is not updated, since it is from 2013. Nonetheless, here are some random thoughts by a European comics reader. I hope that they can help you for your next picks:

Nicolas De Crécy
Rather than 'Foligatto', his masterpiece is 'The Celestial Bibendum', available in English. Maybe you will still find a bit of French "faux profondeur" in it, but that’s part of it. It is a surrealistic comics slowly turning into a tale on the control of narratives.
For a very decent light-hearted book by de Crécy I suggest the recent 'La République du Catch', as far as I know only available in French, Italian, Japanese, maybe Spanish. Here is my quick review: https://www.goodreads.com/rsview/show/3439639587

Réné Goscinny
Any ‘Asterix' album written by this guy is a gem. The man was a master craftsman in the art of staging gags in 1 or 2 pages. His 'Lucky Luck' albums are also quite funny. Lucky Luck is a parody of the western genre and back then was drawn by the Belgian cartoonist Morris, who actually invented the character before hiring Goscinny for the writing.

Stan Sakai
If you like Carl Barks’s 'Donald Duck' and 'Lone Wolf and Cub', then ‘Usagi Yojimbo’ could potentially be your favourite American cartoonist ever. I am still exploring it, here more: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/3438041067

CONTINUES...
Monkey_Feyerabendhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12573708743732899341noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8292243573706628824.post-2262535536962393842020-03-29T00:32:31.360-07:002020-03-29T00:32:31.360-07:00Great list, this is just what I was looking for to...Great list, this is just what I was looking for to fill in my to-read list. Oesterheld is truly a must read author. I personally recommend fisrt try Mort Cinder because is shorter than El eternauta, but not in detriment of its quality; also el eternauta has a metaphorical meaning about peronism, yankee imperalism, and the coups d'etat of '55 that maybe are more appealing for the local public, that being said not for nothing is knowed for being the maximum exponent of the national comic tradition.Togo12https://www.blogger.com/profile/02940934512806892089noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8292243573706628824.post-14109318098270125872019-09-08T14:50:34.034-07:002019-09-08T14:50:34.034-07:00I noticed that Mike Carey is missing from this com...I noticed that Mike Carey is missing from this comic book list.... duge_buwembohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15671078175031481458noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8292243573706628824.post-20763837520171615132019-06-10T04:15:17.185-07:002019-06-10T04:15:17.185-07:00Hmmmm, also interesting that an article titled “su...Hmmmm, also interesting that an article titled “suggested readings in comics” makes no mention of Stanley Marvel?????Machttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08066623681359675407noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8292243573706628824.post-51712955178290884842019-06-10T04:14:25.314-07:002019-06-10T04:14:25.314-07:00This comment has been removed by the author.Machttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08066623681359675407noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8292243573706628824.post-51122907957262209822019-06-10T04:10:28.477-07:002019-06-10T04:10:28.477-07:00May I humbly recommend you add Mort Cinder to your...May I humbly recommend you add Mort Cinder to your “to read” list.Machttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08066623681359675407noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8292243573706628824.post-45957561080660495752018-08-14T11:51:45.382-07:002018-08-14T11:51:45.382-07:00You should try Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind,...You should try Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, by Hayao Miyasaki. Although some of his bigger stories may be a little too over the top, I still find them intriguing and he has a lot of shorties. I suggest The Enigma of Amigara Fault, it is around 30 pages long and a nice example of what to expect of Ito's work.
http://imgur.com/gallery/ZNSaq
Asano mostly work with Slice of Life stories, but I think Nijigahara Holograph (a more experimental one shot, good even though it was one of his first works) and Oyasumi Punpun (sometimes way too grim but still a great work encompassing a kid until his 20s) may be worth checking out.
I only have read 20th Century Boys of Urasawa, but his most famous work is Monster because of the anime. He has a fast and cinematic sense of pace I've not encountered in many other comics (on second note, I think it reminds me a bit of Warren Ellis style but more thrilling), and although 20th got a bit draggy by the end it was still a great comic overall.Sizenando Costahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16021891827990840806noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8292243573706628824.post-63513127771617416932016-10-26T13:43:32.081-07:002016-10-26T13:43:32.081-07:00Thanks for the suggestion, I'll have to take a...Thanks for the suggestion, I'll have to take a look at his work.JG Keelyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16194265398177420233noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8292243573706628824.post-26853619270292812152016-10-26T03:09:12.363-07:002016-10-26T03:09:12.363-07:00I bet you'd get a real kick out of the work of...I bet you'd get a real kick out of the work of Jason Lutes if you haven't already.
